Rinze “Ray” Vandersluis

VANDERSLUIS, Rinze “Ray” at Chatham Kent Hospice on Saturday June 24, 2017 at the age of 69, our loving husband, father, and brother, Ray VanderSluis entered his eternal home. Ray was born in Lollum, Netherlands on July 30, 1947 and immigrated to Canada at the age of 3. Ray lived in Hamilton for a year and Cambridge for 3 years but settled his family in Chatham, where he lived and worked his entire life. Married 47 years to Theresa (nee Ennema), Ray passed away peacefully after a 2-year battle with cancer. Throughout his life, he strove to follow Jesus Christ’s example and message. “ …let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12: 1,2. He will be truly missed by his children and 14 grandchildren: Sarah and Dustyn Pumfrey, Josh, Andrea and Kelli, Dan and Karen VanderSluis, Isabelle and Eva, Rachel and Brad Goodreau, Sydney, Emma, Madeline and James, Mary Ellen and Jay Alward, Jakob and Olivia, Phil and Jessie-Lynn VanderSluis, Tyler, Danielle, and Jackson. Ray was the loving brother to Hessy and Steve Byma, Donald and Maggie VanderSluis, Mike VanderSluis, Ken and Ellen VanderSluis, and sister-in-law Kathy VanderSluis. He is predeceased by his parents: Klaas and Jean VanderSluis. The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday June 29, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Grace Christian Reformed Church. A memorial service will take place Friday June 30, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Grace Christian Reformed Church. Charitable donations to World Renew (https://worldrenew.net/). My deep condolenses to you all at this time. Ray was a deeply devoted church member. It was neat to go to church with my mom and visit with Ray and you before the church service began. 12. Very sad to find out about Ray – such a great athlete – best softball & hockey player I’ve ever played with – with him on our team we knew we were the best – last time I spoke with Ray was at a birthday party several years ago – he was the same guy as 40 years earlier – I told him that he was the best athlete I ever played with – he just gave me that same warm modest smile.

  13. Dear Theresa and family,
We extend our condolences to you. Ray’s death reminds us that death can be a relief, but at the same time it it can also be cruel and painful. We know Christ has conquered death and that Ray is in much better health and a much better place. We pray that God will give you strength and comfort in the days ahead. Knowing that Ray was a child of God also means that you can go beyond the pain that death brings and live in the hope and assurance of seeing him at the resurrection. Our love and prayers go with you.

  14. I, too, looked up to Ray. I remember him being a dedicated cadet counsellor and one of the leaders of the church softball team. I recall showing up for practice one evening thinking we’d play ball. Ray showed up and announced a change of plan. Instead of just another practice, Ray had enlisted the entire team to work on some building project for the company that was sponsoring the team. It was the right thing to do and we younger members of the team learned much about integrity and dedication.
Theresa and family, may God bless you in the coming days, months, and years.

Wow this is sad. The memmories of the two summer I worked for Ray and his brothers are great memories. I remeber the quiet and determined way Ray did things and it left a lasting impact on my life. He was a solid christian guy. When Janet and I would visted Chatham Grace Church in the years after those summers, Ray was always ready to chat about how things were going in our lives and in our own business in Owen Sound. He was a great guy and will be missed. Janet and I send our condolances to all of you.

  23. Deepest sympathy to the Vandersluis family.

I always admired “Mr. Vandersluis” very much as he was one of my first bosses. I also knew him from the church and school community where he was greatly respected.

Even after I moved away, if I happened to bump into Ray, he would always make a point to chat with me and typically use a little bit of his dry wit.

I can only imagine how much you will miss him…..
