Margaret Lawton

Margaret “Margie” Lawton died peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, September 14, 2020 at Chatham Kent Hospice at the age of 76.

Born on August 21, 1944, Margie was the daughter of the late Dan & Jenny Oltean.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Dowie James Edgar Lawton (1986) and is survived by her partner of 25 years Don Baker.

She will always be remembered by her sons Steven (Janice) Lawton and Jason Lawton.

Dearest grandma of Jared & Trevor Lawton, Shelby & Coral Fenner and Morgan Lawton.

Sister of Ellen, Betty, John, Pete and the late Marie, Annette, and Bill.

Fondly remembered by numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Many will remember Margie from Shoppers Drug Mart on Queen where she worked for almost 30 years. She was the smiling face you would see at the back door till. She was always on the go and loved to travel. You would always find her with a Tim’s coffee in hand. She made many friends with her easy going and good-natured personality.

She loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren or as she called them her “babies”. Margie will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She touched so many lives. We take comfort in knowing she is finally at peace and will treasure the memories. You are forever in our hearts.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Verburg, Dr. Bailey, Jacqueline from VON, Lisa DeBeck from Bayshore, Lisa Babcock, the PCCT team and Chatham Kent Hospice for their support during Margie’s journey.

As per Margie’s wishes cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Friends planning an expression of remembrance are asked to consider the Chatham Kent Hospice.

  27. Little did I know at 16 years old that I would call this woman mom. But when Dowie died, Steve’s group of buddies became a little family. Our time at the farm became more frequent and my time with Margie changed from “Steve’s mom” to just “mom”
At 16 I didn’t have alot to contribute in the way of helpful advice…but she asked anyway. Mostly our talks were about “her boys” as she struggled to carry on as a single parent. I remember the conversation about her going to work at Shoppers…and so many more.
The Lawton homestead became our party central because it made her happy to know we were “home” and not running the roads.
She put up with so much…. just to have her “kids” safe and happy.
Many years later, when I found myself standing at the front of that room dressed in black…. our eyes connected passed the many mourners ahead of her.
When she finally got to me she said “oh my girl” …. I fell into her arms and cried. If anyone could understand …. it was mom…
She said “you’ll get through this. You helped me and I’ll help you” …
I am profoundly sad that you are gone …
But I am so so grateful that I got to be a part of your life for most of mine. You taught me things, you inspired things in me, and you always left me smiling. I am so relieved that you struggle no more. And as I sit here…tears running down my face…. I know that you are surrounded by the love of those who have waited so long to see you again. Give them hugs from me….and tell Andrew I will celebrate your birthdays with my brother from another mother next year!
Thankyou Mama…. I hope you always knew how very loved you were xoxo

  33. Even though my time at Shopper’s Drug Mart was not that long, the memories you gave me will last a life time. You reminded me of my own Meme and I told you often. Everyone says that god takes the greatest ones, some times earlier than we like, but this time he left a great one with us until you were ready to go to him . Rest east Margie and know that you were so loved.

  36. I worked with Margie through my high school and university days at Shoppers. She worked the back till and I was on the pharmacy till, so I could always count on her friendly face to help get through some of the longer shifts, and more complicated delivery requests. She always had a smile, a pat on the hand, or a quick hug to offer. Margie always asked about my work and life once I moved on from Shoppers, and would ask my mom how I was doing after I married and moved to Boston (she knew it was hard for me to be away). Margie was the kindest, most sincere, caring individual and every person felt friendship and love in her presence. I’m so sorry for your loss and my heartfelt and deepest condolences to the entire family.

  37. Shoppers on Queen will be hard to shop at without seeing Margie’s smiling face and often multi tasking. One hand on the phone and the other answering a customers question always with a smile on her face. The back till has lost two special ladies who brightened my day whenever i was in the store. Sending sincere sympathy to all of her family.

  43. Dear Steven and Jason,
When I saw your Mom’s obituary in the Chatham paper I was deeply saddened. The Dietrichs and the Lawtons had so much fun together; I can’t even begin to estimate the number of pots of tea your Mom and I consumed sitting at her kitchen table. And then the summers sitting with her by our pool, while you and Brett and Heather splashed away, and the time we packed up with your grandma and my mother and off to Toronto we headed to Canada Place- oh the memories. We did have so much fun. Prayers to you and your families during this very difficult time. I hope that your many fond memories of your Mom help sustain you during this time of bereavement

  44. I just found out of Margie’s passing. Margie spent a lot of time visiting at my parents house her Uncle Byron and Aunt Olga Johnston. We always caught up when we run into each other. She was a very kind cousin. I will miss our occasional talks. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.
