Leonard McAvoy

Leonard Brian McAvoy passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at the age of 69 in Chatham, Ontario. He is survived by his wife, Sandra (nee Hill), and children Kelly Ann McAvoy (Michael Hall) and John McAvoy (Diana). Leonard will be missed by his grandchildren Erica, Brian and Megan. He is also survived by siblings Lawrence McAvoy(Jeanette), Marylin McAvoy (Ted Fulcher), Anne VanHoof (Andy), Mary McAvoy (Andy Austin) and is predeceased by his parents, Edna and Dorian McAvoy. Born in Oshawa, Ontario, Leonard learned to love the game of hockey and found success on the ice. One of Leonard’s proudest achievements was becoming a loving husband and father. Leonard was a plumber by trade and enjoyed many years working in his field at the Chrysler plant in Windsor, Ontario. He was an active member of the union and KBD club. Sports were particularly important to Leonard throughout his life. He was an avid tennis player, a golf enthusiast and was recently conquering the pickleball courts. Leonard was loved by many and we will all miss his sense of fun and playfulness. Rest in peace Leonard, and play on. A celebration of life will follow at a later date. Donations are welcome, in lieu of flowers, to the Jumpstart Sports Program.

  5. Wow! Sorry to his family to hear this. I went to school, played sports and chummed with “Lenny” up to age 12 when my family moved out of town. His dad was my confirmation sponsor. Many great memories of those childhood years. RIP

  6. Getting to know Len through my daughter’s marriage was a pleasure indeed. What I have seen passed on to your children is admirable. You were truly a great role model and inspiration to the wonderful parents they have become. Rest in peace Len. My sorrow to you Sandra.❤

I know Len will be missed greatly. He sure has left his mark on this world with his wonderful children and amazing grandchildren who will miss him so dearly. I know they all get their sense of humor from him! I will always remember him for his quick wit (and of course that one of a kind amazing voice of his!) Love to you all.

  8. So sorry for your loss Sandra, Kelly and John and family. We will certainly join you at a later date to celebrate Len’s life. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. Hugs!

  9. Our hearts are with you all. And I’m so very grateful to have gotten to know Len as an adult…rather than the teenage girl heading to the house to pick up her friend. Len believed in the power of people to accomplish whatever it is they wanted, and that sense of genuine belief buoyed me in many moments over the last few years. We love you all, and we will celebrate Len’s life terrifically. He deserves a beautiful send off!

  10. Dear Sandra, Kelly, John and family;
    I am so very sorry and saddened to hear of Len’s passing. It is heartbreaking. Len was a great guy and always took the time to chat and to show an interest in others. That’s a great quality. I also enjoyed his wit, calm nature and his sense of humour. I know he will be deeply missed by you all, as he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. My heart goes out to you all and I hope that the many wonderful memories you have made with him over the years will sustain you in your deep loss.
    His memory will be fondly carried in the hearts of all the lives he touched throughout his career, friendships, sports and travels.
    Sincere Condolences

    1. So sorry for your loss. I will miss talking to Len about golf, and waving to him on the course.,

  11. It is hard to believe that this vibrant guy is no longer here. Lenny was quick with a joke and always made me laugh. I am so sorry Kelly, John and Sandra that you have lost this guy so early❤️

  12. Lenny was a good friend of my brother Bernie who we also lost too early. He hung out at our house and played pool with a group of friends. Lenny was bigger than life and would always leave you with a great story and smile on your face. I remember him as a great athlete and a great friend of my brothers. My dad, who wasn’t fond of all my brothers friends always had a word and a smile with Lenny. In the true McAvoy spirit he was always respectful and polite. The f bombs would drop when my dad left and the days escapades revealed. My heartfelt condolences go out to Lenny’s children and the McAvoy clan. A bigger than life person has left a void for those who carry on. Rest in peace from the Hurst family.

  13. Blessings for Sandra and family..
    When Lenny was in Windsor he was always full of fun…
    And he was so proud to introduce Sandy to us.. His eyes were full of happiness…. He had found his match!
    He will be sorely missed by all the McAvoys. and we have lots of memories to make him our Windsor legend…… One fond memory I have is how he helped his Uncle Paul when his mother, ( Len’s grandmother), the wonderful Matriarch of the Oshawa McAvoy Clan, passed.
    I shall miss the twinkle in his eyes and his teasing.
