Kathryn Butler

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kay (Jackson) Butler.  With her girls at her side, Kay passed away peacefully on October 11, 2021 at Riverview Gardens, Chatham at the age of 76.  Kay is survived by her daughters Kristen (Neil) Wakani of St. Catharines, and Sara Butler of Chatham.  Proud “Gramma Kay” to Amirrah Wakani.  She leaves behind her faithful companion Smudge.  Kay is also survived by her brother Jim (Sarah) Jackson of Chatham and their children Kenneth and Shannon, many nieces, nephews, cousins and aunt.  She is predeceased by her parents Kenneth and Jean Jackson.

Kay was a remarkable, selfless woman and left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know her.  Kind, compassionate, loving, devoted and fiercely loyal, her gentle nature and calm demeanour was always reassuring.  There was nothing Kay could not, or would not, do.  Always learning, always thinking, always do-ing.  One could not ask for a better mother, grandmother, friend, confidante, mentor and neighbour.  Her impact on the people, and animals, whose lives she touched is immeasurable.

A quiet woman with a kind soul, Kay was passionate about her gardens and always seemed to have her hands busy on a project of some sort.  When her nose wasn’t in a book, you could find her baking, knitting and whistling away at a familiar tune on the radio.  Road trips to Point Pelee and Niagara Falls were always at the top of her list and she looked forward to her adventures to the Butterfly Conservatory with her granddaughter Amirrah.  Kay loved to create, but nothing she created is more precious and valuable than the memories we will carry with us through the coming days.

Donations to the Canadian Wildlife Federation or Alzheimer Society can be made in Kay’s name if desired.  Cremation has taken place and family will celebrate privately at a later date.

  1. Sara, Kristen and Amirrah, your Mom (Gramma) was the best neighbour ever, always there with a smile, a friendly greeting and the right tool for the job in her shed. We will miss our chats on the front porch with her. Remembering you all in our thoughts and prayers.

  5. Kay was my neighbour when I was a new homeowner/mother many years ago. She would give advice on gardening (it didn’t help), invite my young son to see her kitties (as he barged into her house), and join us for birthday cake under the tree in the backyard. Always a kind word and a smile. She set the bar high in the neighbour department! Sincere condolences, Shelly and Dawsyn
