Henry Smulders

Henry M. Smulders, of Chatham, Ontario passed away at the age of 66 on Wednesday, June 9, 2021. He was the proud father of sons Josh (Lindsay) and Chad (Lorrie). His grandchildren Landon, Evie and Evander will miss spending time with their Grandpa. Henry is predeceased by his parents, Peter and Joanna Smulders and sister Nellie. He is survived by siblings Gert, Elizabeth, Albert, Martin and Bill.

Henry worked hard as a truck trailer technician. He loved cooking food for people, especially his delicious Dutch pancakes. Nothing made him prouder than his beautiful grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, golf, a drive to Erieau and completing Sudoku puzzles. Shania Twain music and telling a good joke made Henry smile. We can still hear Dad saying “Is that your final answer?” and “Put can’t behind the door and do it!”

Henry’s family will remember him privately with cremation and interment at a later date.

  1. Henry was a great neighbour. His hearty laughter will be missed on our block. Along with the chirping birds it was one of our favourite early morning sounds to wake up to. We appreciated his “neighbourhood watch” with Mike and know he’s now looking down on Chatham from Heaven. Your family is in our thoughts.

  4. I didn’t grow up in a fancy neighbourhood, but I did grow up on a street where I have had the privilege of living beside some kind, hardworking and friendly people my entire life. Yesterday Our Street lost someone very special. My heart is heavy since he’s left behind two sons and grandkids he was always happy to share about.
Henry was my neighbour my entire life, and he was a great man. He had this awesome teal pick up trick for most of my younger years and I’d be excited to see him driving around town. He handed out O Henry chocolate bars at Halloween because he was cool like that. When Josh and Chad were no longer interested in their above ground pool he helped haul it across the street to my backyard where we gave it a second life. Thinking of losing Henry is tough. Not only because I have endless memories of him at his home across the street form childhood, but also because I didn’t get to say goodbye. As an adult, every time I’d go home and park my car on the street in between our two houses I’d almost always see Henry outside on the porch. He met me always with a smile, a hello, and friendly conversation about how things were going up there in Toronto. Talking to Henry was always something I enjoyed and looked forward to coming home. I noticed over the last few years how beautiful Henry’s flowers were growing in the window. I am saddened at the fact I will never be able to have a Merry Christmas, Happy Father’s Day, or general how have you been chat with Henry again, and that I will no longer see his flowers in the window.
I share this message publicly because my heart is heavy, Henry was more than just a neighbour. He’s been someone I have known my entire life. I am praying for his family and I truly hope they find comfort together in these difficult times, and that Henry may rest in peace.

  10. Rest in paradise, Henry. Hakuna Matata, means no worries – I worked with Henry at TTL, he was one of my favourite people. He used to say that to me daily, hakuna matata with that sweet smile of his. Whenever Shania Twain would come on the radio he would get so happy, and to give him a hard time I would tell him how much I disliked her (all joking) just to wind him up.
He was a great man, memories of him and happy times will be remembered forever.
Sending my condolences to his friends and family.
