Alan James Paterson

Alan James Paterson (January 15, 1942) passed away peacefully at the Chatham-Kent Hospice on January 11, 2017 surrounded by his family.

Alan was one of seven children (Irene, Bill, Bobby, Alan, Gary, Jim and Colin) born to the late Robert (Scotty) and Amy Paterson. He grew up in Chatham, where he met and married Dianne Tulloch in 1966. They had three children together: David, Stephanie, and Kristen. Alan worked at Superior Tool and Die until 1979 when he and his family moved to Peterborough, Ontario where he took a teaching position at Sir Sandford Fleming College. After 20 years of teaching, Alan and Dianne returned to Chatham where he continued to work as a tool and die maker in Windsor. Upon retirement, Alan spent his summers on the golf course and his winters waiting for golf season, passing time bowling, playing pool, doing crosswords and watching hockey. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren, who adored him.

Alan and Dianne recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with family and friends. Shortly after the anniversary, Alan was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer. True to his nature, Alan fought it for as long as he could, but he finally lost his battle on January 11.

He is survived by his wife, Dianne; his children and their spouses, David and Samantha, Stephanie and Tom, and Kristen and Glen; his grandchildren (Olivia, Spencer, Xavier, Angus and Archie); his siblings, Irene Campbell and Colin Paterson and his wife Janice; and several nieces and nephews. His brothers William (Bill), Gary, Robert (Bobby) and James (Jim) predeceased him.

Alan will be missed greatly by family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2-4pm on Saturday, January 21st at the Links of Kent Golf Club. Donations can be made to the Chatham Kent Hospice.
